Is a Sunroom a Smart Investment?

A sunroom allows your family to bask in the sun all year round. It’s not a cheap pleasure, so consider whether such an addition is worth building.

🌞Types of Sunrooms

A sunroom is an additional room attached to the house. It usually faces the backyard but can be built elsewhere with enough sunlight. A four-season sunroom can be heated and cooled, allowing year-round use. A three-season sunroom is not heated, so it cannot be used during the winter in cold climates.

🌞More Living Space

If you feel like you don’t have enough space in the living room when the whole family gathers or are a fan of parties, the extra space will help host events. If you need peace, you can retreat to the tranquility of the sunroom, curl up alone with a good book, or spend some time one-on-one with your loved ones.

🌞A Place to Enjoy the Scenery

If you like to admire the natural landscape all year round but don’t like sitting in the hot sun, swatting away insects, or braving the cold, a sunroom can be an ideal solution.

🌞Costs and Benefits

The size and materials of the sunroom will affect the project cost. The location you choose is also essential. Nothing should block the sunlight. A south-facing sunroom will receive more light in winter and thus be warmer than a north-facing sunroom. If you want to use the addition year-round, the sunroom will require more insulation and will be more expensive to heat.

Building a sunroom may or may not increase the value of your home. It can provide additional living space, but these square meters might not be considered in your home’s appraisal since a sunroom is not a full-fledged room.

A sunroom may attract potential buyers but can also cause concern about additional heating and cooling costs.

📌If you are buying a house with such an addition, ensure the seller obtains the necessary building permits.
