Fun Food Facts That May Surprise You

For a bit of fun, dietitians have put together a gallery of interesting food facts, some of which might surprise you:

🍎 Apples are an energy powerhouse. Next time you're low on energy, grab an apple. With its high content of carbohydrates, fiber, vitamin C, and minerals, apples provide more energy than coffee.

🍫 Chocolate was once used as currency. The Aztecs, known for their love of chocolate, used cocoa beans as currency and even paid taxes with them.

🥦 Broccoli has more protein than steak. Plus, it contains no saturated or trans fats, and no cholesterol.

🍬 Gummy candies are coated with car wax. The shiny glaze on gummy candies comes from carnauba wax, the same material used to make cars look glossy. But unless you're eating them by the handful, there's not much harm.

🥕 Carrots were originally purple. Until the 16th century, almost all cultivated carrots were purple, with some mutated versions occasionally appearing in yellow or white. It's believed that orange carrots were developed by Dutch growers who took mutant strains of purple carrots and turned them into the modern variety.

🍣 Farmed salmon is actually white. Wild salmon is naturally pinkish-orange due to its diet of shrimp. Farmed salmon only gets its pink color because farmers add carotenoids, a plant pigment, to their feed.

🥜 Peanut butter is a health food. Regular consumption of peanut butter, which is high in healthy fats, can lower cholesterol, aid in weight loss, and help prevent type 2 diabetes.

🍅 Tomatoes were once considered poisonous. In 18th-century Europe, tomatoes were called "poison apples" because aristocrats sometimes got sick and died after eating them. Eventually, it was discovered that the high acidity of tomatoes could cause lead to leach from the pewter plates of the time.

Wishing you a great Monday and beyond!🙂
